Westbeth Artists Housing was founded in 1970 to provide affordable housing for artists and their families. Located in the former Bell Laboratories, Westbeth Artists Housing was designed by a young Richard Meier and was the first adaptive reuse project of its kind. Its mission is to be a resource and generator of artistic endeavor for artists working in the fields of literary, visual, and performing arts. Within the complex are spaces devoted to the creation and presentation of art by resident and guest artists, and by the arts organizations located there. Events, exhibitions, and workshops sponsored by Westbeth, often in partnership with cultural or community organizations, are offered at the Westbeth Gallery, the Westbeth Community Room, and other venues free or at low cost to the public. Guided tours (capacity 20) will be offered on a rolling basis from 1pm to 4pm, covering the history of both Bell Laboratories and Westbeth Artists Housing, along with the vital role that Westbeth plays for artists today and will play in the future. Artists studios will be open for drop-in visits from 2pm to 6pm.
