Powerhouse Arts, a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression, stewarded the redevelopment of the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station in Gowanus to create a new facility that houses fabrication facilities for ceramics, large metals, print, public art, and textiles. The building—designed by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with PBDW Architects— re-imagines the historic power plant as a new art center that meets the multidisciplinary needs of the contemporary arts ecosystem, with multi-use facilities for education, events, and public engagement.

Visitors can explore the Loft, Small Hall, and the expansive Grand Hall—formerly the power plant’s turbine room—as well as artist workspaces: Community Ceramic Studio, Alpha Workshops textile studio, MGC Community Print Shop, Digital Print Lab, and Workspace 11 metal fabricators. On view is the exhibition Power Dynamics, a collaboration between the Alumni Association of the New York Academy of Art (AANYAA) and Powerhouse Arts examining the many nuances, forms, and possible readings of the term power.

Special Events:
– Saturday 12-6pm: City Council District 39 staffers will discuss participatory budgeting in the Small Hall throughout the day.
– Saturday 1-5pm: All-ages mask making workshop in the Loft, hosted by Materials for the Arts.
– Sunday 2-5pm: Printmaking workshop in the Small Hall, hosted by the Neighborhood Printing Collective.

Sidewalk-level entrances are accessible by car along 3rd Avenue. ASL Interpreters, sensory kits, and seats with back support are available upon request. No onsite parking is available. Large strollers and bikes must be stored in designated areas. Large bags are not permitted. Service animals are allowed. No pets permitted.
