Join NY Sun Works for a rooftop tour of a Hydroponic Greenhouse at the Brooklyn School of Inquiry (BSI), located within the neighborhood of Bensonhurst/Gravesend. NY Sun Works is a nonprofit that is transforming learning through building state-of-the-art Hydroponic Classrooms to teach the science of sustainability and climate change to our future generations. Students at BSI and the other 2 public schools in the building grow food from seed-to-harvest in the greenhouse, as they build an understanding of the connection between humans, technology, and the environment and their direct relationship to climate change. While growing hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to share with their families and school communities, students are fostering deeper connections with nature and a sense of joy in the learning process. This greenhouse is one of over 340 hydroponic science laboratories NY Sun Works has built in NYC K-12 schools. The space holds 9 different hydroponic systems along with a 400 gallon aquaponic tank growing tilapia. With a potential to grow over 5,000 pounds of produce annually, it is the largest learning greenhouse within NYC’s Department of Education system. Come learn how students are empowered to seek solutions to environmental challenges as they grow fresh tomatoes and cucumbers year-round within South Brooklyn.
