Meet Michael Roque, 15-Year OHNY Weekend Volunteer
I’m an Open House New Yorker because…
I love this adopted city and I’m continuously awed by how there’s always new history to learn and something to experience. And to me there’s no other organization in New York that gives me that sense of wonderment.
What is your favorite OHNY memory?
My favorite memory is a one-time Saturday event OHNY hosted that gave us access to a now defunct braking tunnel from one of the original steam trains in Brooklyn. The access was through a manhole in the middle of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn and we had to climb down a ladder to walk around this massive masonry tunnel. It was easily the coolest thing I’ve ever experienced at OHNY.
Share a memory of a Weekend location that surpassed your expectations.
Visiting TWA Terminal prior to the renovation and hotel addition because Eero Saarinen is why I became an architect. Being able to experience a space I never thought I’d see made me feel like I was 15 again.
Do you have any tips you’d like to share with prospective volunteers?
Listen to your District Coordinators and why yes they’d love a cortado.
