Is Gentrification really inevitable? Gentrification Is Inevitable And Other Lies dispels some of the most commonly held assumptions about the processes of gentrification that shape cities around the world. Join us for a conversation with Leslie Kern about the misconceptions and realities of gentrification in our city.

Gentrification Is Inevitable And Other Lies (Verso, September 2022) posits that “gentrification is built on finding ways to take what others have created while simultaneously wiping away their presence, contributions, and history.” This book takes an intersectional approach to break down the narrative that gentrification is an unavoidable outcome for neighborhoods and outlines ways in which communities can fight against dispossession. Leslie Kern, author of Feminist City, is an associate professor of geography and environment and women’s and gender studies at Mount Allison University.

This OHNY Stacks talk will feature author Leslie Kern in dialogue with OHNY Board Vice President Saundra Thomas. Their conversation will unpack how we talk about gentrification and understand some of the underlying power structures that impact neighborhood change.
