Within the eight-acre site of the National September 11 Memorial are two of the world’s largest man-made waterfalls. These same eight acres were once the site of two of the world’s most recognizable buildings and, of course, many of the events of 9/11. Since its opening in September 2011, millions of people have visited the Memorial. In this unusual tour, Ed Welter and Lisa Kleist will use the original blueprints drawn in 1967 to take you back in time to stand in the exact locations of the original architectural elements of the Twin Towers. See the precise locations and learn the stories of the heroes who saved thousands, while in many cases sacrificing their own lives. The tour will include: – Maps specifically created for this tour, not available anywhere else; – Identification of original locations of the Sphere, the Survivor Tree, and St. Nicholas Church; – Explanation of the different levels of the original World Trade Center and how that affected activity on 9/11; – The story of “Big Mike” of the FDNY and how his special knowledge of tools played a role on 9/11 in a harrowing elevator rescue; – The story of Josephine Harris and why she was called an angel; – Following in the final footsteps of Stephen Siller, to the exact spot where he stepped into immortality, leading to his family’s creation of one of the most successful charitable foundations in the country; – Identification of artifacts contained in the 9/11 Museum.
