About this Event

History & Architecture

Commissioned by F.W. Woolworth and designed by Cass Gilbert, the Woolworth Building was the tallest building in the world from its completion in 1913 until 1930. A pioneering feat of steel-frame construction clad in architectural terracotta, its cruciform lobby design and lavish Gothic ornamentation earned it the nickname "The Cathedral of Commerce."

What You'll See

Dr. Elena Rodriguez is an architectural historian specializing in early 20th-century New York City skyscrapers. She has published extensively on the evolution of commercial architecture in Lower Manhattan and brings deep insight into the artistic and engineering triumphs of the Woolworth Building.

About Your Guide

Marvel at the spectacular Byzantine-style ceiling mosaics and murals depicting "Commerce" and "Labor." Look closely for the famous whimsical gargoyles, including caricatures of Frank W. Woolworth counting nickels and architect Cass Gilbert holding a model of the building. The tour also covers the grand marble staircase and the intricate details of the vaulted arcades.
