South Bronx

Boogie down to the birthplace of hip-hop and wild style to see for yourself what one of the most remarkable urban revitalization stories in the country looks like in action.

Two rowboats with people paddling on a calm river, trees and tall buildings in the background.

During Game 2 of the 1977 World Series, as cameras panned out over the neighborhoods surrounding Yankee Stadium to show smoke rising from a nearby fire—a common sight at the time after decades of top-down “urban renewal” strategies and racial redlining—sports broadcaster Howard Cossell issued his infamous pronouncement: “Ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning.” A half-century later, the South Bronx has become a case study for revitalization. New affordable and mixed-income housing developments are sprouting up left and right, while a vibrant cultural district has formed in the neighborhood of Hunts Point, thanks to the hard work of local activists and community leaders.

During OHNY Weekend, visit a collection of new housing developments, cultural facilities, and local businesses to see what community-driven neighborhood revitalization looks like in action.
