Innovation in Preservation

New York is one of the oldest cities in America—and preserving that history is hard work. See where the best in preservation is on view, with support from the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation.

A bright laboratory with plants on shelves and tables, large windows show green trees outside.

Founded as New Amsterdam more than four centuries ago in 1624, New York is one of the most historic cities in the United States. All across the five boroughs during OHNY Weekend, you can visit architectural remnants of different eras from throughout that history, from Dutch farmhouses to Revolutionary War-era forts, to resplendent Gilded Age mansions. Whether a building is preserved as-is to show how previous generations of New Yorkers lived, or reimagined and revitalized through adaptive reuse for the 21st century, preservationists, designers, and architects must grapple with myriad questions about how the city’s past lives on in the present.

Open House New York and the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation invite you to visit a selection of places that take a wide range of approaches to preserving, protecting, and opening historic architecture, landscape design, and decorative and fine arts during OHNY Weekend.
