The MTA is making big improvements at Grand Central to improve wayfinding and passenger circulation throughout the 42nd Street corridor. This tour will lead participants throughout Grand Central to see and discuss the many project elements, including the new Flushing Line passageway. This new entrance required construction crews to dig approximately 60 feet into the Manhattan schist, use controlled blasting to clear out rock, and tunnel horizontally above the 7 line, all while keeping subway service running uninterrupted. This was first covered by Gothamist in February. The project includes critical state of good repair work throughout Grand Central, and the MTA has made significant progress in the last eight months, hitting major milestones in the passageway as well as stairwell construction and repairs to the station cavern ceiling. Participants will be able to hear from senior members of MTA Construction & Development about the many benefits and challenges of this project, as well as get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes of how the MTA builds and maintains New York City’s complex public transportation system.

Note that this is a tour around the perimeter of an active construction site but the tour will not enter the site.

Ticket holders must submit a photocopy of their passport or state-issued ID to [email protected] for a background check by Wednesday, 10/9 at 12 pm. Access to this tour is contingent upon a timely submission of IDs and passing a background check. Admission is not guaranteed.

There will be loud noises, and while participants will not be entering the site, they must wear closed toed shoes.

No children or service animals are allowed. Visitors must be 18 or older to join the tour. Photography is prohibited.
