Meet Susan Katz, 20-Year OHNY Volunteer

I’ve been an Open House New York since

My name is Susan Katz. I’ve been a volunteer from the beginning. I probably found out from Big Apple Greeters. I was already a licensed NYC Tour Guide so the excuse to explore more of my city and share with locals and visitors seemed like a great volunteer gig.

What’s your favorite OHNY memory?

The first year I helped move 1,200 people through the recently renovated Tweed Courthouse and I was hooked.

What’s a hidden gem you’ve found through OHNY?

I had so many prior sites listed on my volunteer form that I would encourage whoever was doing the assignments to surprise me. My favorite surprise was Welling Court (Google it). Half the time was spent telling locals what OHNY was. The other half was spent helping visitors from all over find art by their favorite street artists. Today Welling Court is within walking distance of the Astoria Ferry Stop.

Do you have any tips you’d like to share with prospective volunteers?

Volunteers – don’t take a year off. I was one of 4 people who received the first 15 year pins. I decided to “retire” and enjoy the weekend. I came back the following year and will now have to wait until next year for my 20 year pin. (Then I’ll retire!)
