Meet Mary Farrell, 20-Year OHNY Weekend Volunteer

I’ve been an Open House New Yorker since

My brother-in-law, Seth Robbins, who was part of the original board that launched OHNY in 2002, recruited me. When he described the organization, I immediately said yes to volunteering when he asked me!

I’m an Open House New Yorker because…

I love New York! I love architecture! I love NY history! I love sharing my passion for everything NY with friends and strangers!

What do you love about OHNY Weekend?

One of the things I love about OHNY Weekend is the amazing people I meet volunteering. We all come from very different backgrounds and unite over our shared love of New York City!

What do you love about volunteering for OHNY Weekend?

Every year I discover something about New York that I didn’t know.

What’s a hidden gem you’ve found through OHNY?

Perhaps one of the best discoveries was when I visited the Bronx Community College. It was a long trip by subway, bus, and then a half-mile walk uphill to the entry gate, which is at the highest point in all 5 boroughs! The journey was worth it to see the Hall of Fame for Great Americans and the library rotunda with its clerestory Tiffany windows and Connemara marble columns circling inside. I was totally in awe! I never would have found this place on my own. Thank you Open House New York for helping me discover New York City!
