Meet Jennifer Rivers, OHNY Volunteer

I’ve been an Open House New Yorker since

I’ve been an Open House New Yorker since 2016. I was new to Brooklyn and looking for things to do. I went to the Time Out website and saw that Open House New York was happening soon. That was in 2016 and I have been attending since and started to volunteer in 2018.

I’m an Open House New Yorker because…

I’m an Open House New Yorker because I love exploring NYC and seeing interesting things.

What do you love most about OHNY Weekend?

I love the OHNY community. I’ve met so many great people: from volunteers, weekend partners, OHNY staff and of course all the visitors.

Describe OHNY Weekend in 5 words or less

Best Weekend in NYC.

What’s your favorite OHNY memory?

So far, my favorite memory was attending this year’s Launch Party. I got to meet so many people truly interested in OHNY. The Garden at 550 Madison was breathtaking and the live music was great. I had so much fun.

What’s a hidden gem you’ve found through OHNY?

The City Reliquary Museum. A small museum packed with NYC memories.

What Borough/neighborhood would you like to explore more?

Staten Island. I have had an OHNY experience in all the other boroughs.

Share a memory of a Weekend location that surpassed your expectations.

I went to the TWA: Reinventing an Icon presentation. It was a panel discussion and there were representatives from all aspects of the project, from the design of the building to the construction and even an interior designer. As a civil engineer I am always fascinated by iconic architectural landmarks. I was blown away at the genuine enthusiasm all the panelists had for this project. I learned so much about the project.

Do you have any tips you like to share with prospective volunteers?

I would tell them to be reliable. Treat their volunteer commitment with a high level of responsibility. We are counting on you. Also stay positive and flexible; approach the work with a positive attitude and be flexible in adapting to the weekend partner’s needs.

What does being an OHNY Volunteer mean to you?

As an OHNY volunteer, I am helping an organization whose mission resonates with my values.  I am connecting with my community while we are working toward a common goal of making New York City’s amazing architecture open to all New Yorkers.
