Thousands of New Yorkers with behavioral and mental health problems are processed into the criminal justice system each year, even though in many cases the underlying issues would be more effectively treated as mental health disorders. If the city is going to reduce the number of people it incarcerates each year–a goal it has set in order to close Rikers Island–it is going to have to expand the availability of mental health services and increase the number and types of facilities in which it takes place. Open House New York and The Bridge invite you to tour Maple East Residence, a brand new 66-unit supportive housing facility in Crown Heights/East Flatbush for individuals who require behavioral and mental health treatment. Developed by The Bridge, a non-profit agency that provides housing and behavioral health services to 2,800 New Yorkers each year, Maple East Residence offers a range of services including case management, recreational and socialization activities, and off-site vocational training and job placement in an 8-story, environmentally responsible building. Tour this innovative facility to learn more about the intersection between criminal justice and mental health.

About the Bridge
The Bridge was founded in 1954 by former long-term residents of a psychiatric hospital to offer social support to adults with serious mental illness. Today, The Bridge is a $65 million agency providing housing and behavioral health services to 2,800 New Yorkers each year, with more than 40 programs in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Spaces of Justice is a year-long series of tours, panel discussions, and other public programs that allow the public to examine firsthand the spaces with primary responsibility for producing safety and rendering justice in New York City. Major support has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and a grant from the Reba Judith Sandler Foundation.
