Metropolitan: Universal Hip Hop Museum Exhibition Tour

Hip Hop was born in the heart of the Bronx on August 11, 1973, at a now-legendary house party, when DJ Kool Herc demonstrated unique turntable techniques – launching a new sound and approach to creating music. Since then, Hip Hop has evolved from a music genre into a vibrant, creative, and influential culture, encompassing fashion, art, business, dance, media, dining, and activism.

Open House New York Metropolitan Members took part in a special guided tour of The [R]Evolution of Hip Hop, a pop-up exhibition by the Universal Hip Hop Museum, at the Bronx Terminal Market. The exhibition offers an immersive journey through Hip Hop’s Golden Era, 1986-1990, and employs archival items and experimental storytelling techniques to illustrate the continuing global influence of Hip Hop culture.

The Universal Hip Hop Museum’s mission is to teach, engage, and inspire audiences worldwide through the creativity of Hip Hop culture. The UHHM gives audiences unparalleled access to an immersive cultural arts, education, and entertainment experience that tells a comprehensive study of Hip Hop culture’s past, present, and future. A permanent home for the Universal Hip Hop Museum is currently under construction at Bronx Point.
