Whereas, I am enormously proud to lead a city renowned as a global capital of architecture, design, and progress. Founded to promote unity and greater civic participation in the wake of 9/11, the annual Open House New York (OHNY) Weekend festival encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to explore hundreds of significant historic and contemporary sites throughout the five boroughs. On the occasion of its 20th annual weekend. I am pleased to recognize OHNY for its tremendous contributions to our great city.

Whereas, OHNY was established by architect Scott Lauer in 2001 to engages New Yorkers in our city’s architecture, public places, and the future of urban living. Since its inaugural weekend in 2003, OHNY has showcased New York’s outstanding array of notable buildings, museums, parks, bridges , and infrastructure while deepening the public’s understanding of how our natural and built environments can strengthen communities and improve quality of life. The 2022 edition features a mix of in-person and digital programs that invite attendees to discover everything from historic homes, landmark churches, artist studios, neighborhoods, Art Deco buildings, bike corridors, and waterways. In honor of its milestone, OHNY is expanding upon its mission to promote citywide access to all by introducing new programs that address aspects of equity, race, ethnicity, and the climate crisis, and for the first time ever, all of its programs will be free. This year’s lineup also highlights the progress of local green infrastructure and coastal resiliency projects a decade after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.

Whereas, As this weekend’s attendees experience a wide array of iconic attractions, hidden gems, and places normally closed to the public, I applaud OHNY’s leadership, staff, volunteers, and supporters—past and present—for 20 wonderful years of celebrating the remarkable diversity, innovation, skyline, feats of engineering, and visionary people that define New York City. Together, we look forward to even more New Yorkers and visitors enjoying everything OHNY has to offer as we unite to restore our city’s cultural vibrancy and rebuild, renew, and reinvent the five boroughs.

Now therefore, I, Eric Adams, Mayor of the City of New York, do hereby proclaim October 21st-23rd, 2022, in the City of New York as: Open House New York Weekend.

Signed,

Eric Adams

Mayor
