Experience the Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility, New York City’s state-of-the-art recycling facility, where 1,000 tons of residential recycling is received and processed each day. View the tip floor, where recyclables arrive from all over NYC by truck and barge, and see the giant system that sorts those materials and prepares them for sale. Walk through the Recycling Education Center to explore an interactive recycling museum where you’ll learn the ins and outs of the process, and check out sustainability features including the city’s first commercial-scale wind turbine, a large solar array, native plantings, storm water management, and marine habitats. Building design by Selldorf Architects. Please note: The facility is located at the end of the 29th Street pier, all the way to the water. When in doubt, walk towards the wind turbine. Check in with security and continue to the entrance. Please remain on the pedestrian walkway. Do not walk close to the water or through the parking lot.
