The Steinway Reformed Church has a profound historical relationship with the Astoria community, deeply intertwined with the generosity and vision of the Steinway family. Their legendary piano factory, a few blocks away, has built 95% of the concert pianos in the past 150 years. The current building, completed in 1891, is built in traditional carpenter-gothic style, the extraordinary woodwork was, as legend claims, the work of craftspeople from the Steinway piano factory. The Steinway Reformed Church’s involvement in the community is both diverse and impactful. Through partnerships with local groups, the church addresses various needs and promotes well-being. The Greater Astoria Historical Society, the co-host for this year’s OHNY Weekend event at the church, is collaborating with Historic Districts Council and other city-wide preservation organizations to promote this sacred space as a vital community asset, to be a candidate for NYC Landmark Designation. Exhibits on the Church’s history will be on view.
