Together with Jackson Heights, the neighborhood of Elmhurst, Queens is one of the most diverse communities in the world. But different from its neighbor to the north of Roosevelt Avenue—characterized by large six-story landmarked co-ops—its diversity is much more palpable (architecturally speaking) due to the ever-changing, eclectic nature of its housing stock intermingled with small-scale commercial strips and random religious structures.

This walking tour, led by Rafael Herrin-Ferri, architect and author of _All the Queens Houses: An Architectural Portrait of New York's Largest and Most Diverse Borough, _will explore the colorful patchwork of streets that is Elmhurst, visit some of the most idiosyncratic dwellings featured in his book ("Two Musicians," "Mission Glow," "Mixed-use Buddhist", etc), and provide a historical perspective on both the architecture and the increasingly urban context of the neighborhood.
