One of only two non-sectarian burial grounds in Manhattan, this historic cemetery contains 258 underground burial vaults and has seen the funerals of many distinguished citizens, including President James Monroe and the founders of many city institutions. Originally built on farmland to the north of the city, it is now a green oasis in this downtown neighborhood.
