Decades in the making, Manhattan West is a seven-million-square-foot mixed-use development that transforms a previously underdeveloped district into an entirely new 24/7 neighborhood. With a master plan and buildings largely designed by SOM, the long-term project reimagines open railyards, a parking lot, and two existing buildings into a vast public space with offices, residences, hospitality, and retail—all built above active railroad tracks. Through a complex synthesis of planning, architecture, and engineering, Manhattan West enhances pedestrian connectivity between Moynihan Train Hall and the West Side’s High Line and Hudson Yards. In this tour, structural engineers from SOM (including Sam Wilson and Senior Engineer Eunice Long) will take visitors through the two new supertall office towers on the site, as well as the mass timber High Line – Moynihan Connector bridge. The tour consists of three components: viewing the tower lobby and leasing office in One Manhattan West, the tower lobby of Two Manhattan West, and walking across the High Line-Moynihan connector. The tour will explain how the unique site conditions lead to innovative structural design solutions expressed in the architectural design of the various components of the overall development.
