1100 Architect has completed a pilot project for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, designing and delivering a comfort station using modular construction. This project represents the first time NYC Parks has utilized modular construction, setting a precedent for future projects. The Department commissioned 1100 Architect to design not only the pilot project but also the delivery system that would enable the use of modular construction across other initiatives. 1100 Architect’s pioneering efforts culminated in a pilot at Luis Lopez Park in Staten Island.. This project received a 2021 Design Award from the NYC Public Design Commission (PDC), with the PDC praising the comfort station prototype for its efficient off-site construction and cost-effective modular production techniques, which enhance the accessibility and amenities in New York City’s public spaces. The steel-frame structure is enclosed with a facade of glazed blocks, ensuring durability while integrating seamlessly into its surroundings with a vibrant visual presence. A green roof was incorporated to emphasize the commitment of both New York City and 1100 Architect to environmentally conscious design practices.
