Federal Hall National Memorial stands on the site where George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States. It is the site where the First Congress met, back when New York City served as the first capital of the United States.
The current building was built later, from 1834 to 1842, as the Custom House for New York City. The government made most of its money from collecting customs at the Port of New York. In 1862, the building became a subtreasury bank. In 1920, it became the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for a short time until the current Federal Reserve building was finished.
