Rising nearly 70 feet along the Hudson River at the intersection of Canal Street and West Street, this highly visible structure houses 5,000 tons of salt. Both a supremely functional structure and a piece of public sculpture, DSNY's Spring Street Salt Shed has become an icon of lower Manhattan.

This outdoor tour with DSNY will discuss the design and construction of the Salt Shed, the difficulties of safely storing 5,000 pounds of corrosive material, and addressing the community's safety and aesthetic concerns.

All tour participants should wear closed-toe shoes.
