Comunilife’s 148-unit El Borinquen Residence in the Bronx provides supportive and affordable housing for youth aging out of foster care, homeless adults living with special needs, and very low-income seniors and community residents. Designed by Alex Gorlin Architects, the building incorporates the colors of the flags of Central and South America. The Residence’s first floor has community gallery space and an original mural painted by Aurelio del Muro and Marta Blair. The mural is an interpretation of Julia de Burgos’ poem “Río Grande de Loiza” (The Big River of Loiza). The poet, originally from Puerto Rico, was homeless when she passed away in New York City in 1953. She was buried anonymously in Potters Field before having her body claimed by family and returned to Puerto Rico for burial.
