Rising 41 stories from the historic campus of Union Theological Seminary, Claremont Hall is a new mixed-use residential building that connects the academic and cultural tradition of Manhattan’s Morningside Heights neighborhood with contemporary living opportunities — while also providing modern classrooms, academic offices and faculty-designated apartments for the seminary. Claremont Hall’s architecture reflects the Gothic Revival character of the seminary campus and surrounding neighborhood. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects — with amenities and lobby by CetraRuddy — the building itself incorporates Gothic stonework at its base, seamlessly connecting with the entry facade and the preserved historic campus buildings. Inside, a series of shared spaces pay homage to the innovative and eclectic qualities of the Gothic Revival style, while infusing it with a contemporary twist. Visitors will tour an exciting range of the building’s venues and learn about the creative stories behind the design — from the lobby’s custom Hudson River School-inspired tapestry to the walnut-paneled library’s curated art collection and bespoke detailing, the whimsical children’s playroom inspired by a medieval castle, and the indoor/outdoor lounge space. A highlight of the tour is a visit to Claremont Hall’s magnificent indoor pool, restored from the historic campus refectory and adorned with soaring Gothic ceilings and original chandeliers and beams.
