Join Billion Oyster Project for a walking tour of our headquarters and restoration activities on Governors Island! On this tour, you'll have a chance to learn about Billion Oyster Project's mission to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives, while taking in some NYC oyster history. Why oysters? Their reefs provide habitat for many marine species, have the ability to filter water, and help shield New York City shorelines from storm damage. Come on out and learn more about these powerful ecosystem engineers!

Governors Island can only be reached by ferry. Ferry tickets may be purchased at the Battery Maritime Terminal at the time of departure or in advance online. Several ferries in the mornings are free. Visitors should consult the following link for schedules and pricing as well as any Covid-19 protocols:

This experience is offered during OHNY Weekend as a part of Sandy + 10, a series exploring projects fostering recovery and resilience in the 10-year wake of Hurricane Sandy. Nearly $18 billion in federal funds have been invested in New York City's resilience, and this series aims to engage the public in what has been accomplished and where future investment is needed. Sandy + 10 is presented in partnership with Columbia University’s Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes.
