Alice Austen House: Queer Ecologies Garden

Rosebank, Staten Island

Credit: Alice Austen House Museum

Alice Austen House and its surrounding park and gardens are a nationally designated site of LGBTQ+ significance, having been cared for for nearly 30 years by Alice and her loving partner, Gertrude Tate. With the distinct viewpoint that gardens have long been spaces of acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, we have created this garden to serve as a gathering place that fosters understanding. This garden program provides a museum-based Gay Straight Alliance meeting hub, bringing together GSA students from across Staten Island and building upon our existing LGBTQ+ Photographic Storytelling programs. The aim is to create pathways for students to learn about careers in horticulture, parks, and museums in a safe space with their peers. **Sunday Program**: 12pm Grab a map from our main entrance and embark on a vibrant self-guided photowalk along Alice Austen’s historic waterfront home and grounds. The walk highlights our Queer Ecologies Garden where photographers can capture the unique interplay of natural beauty and queer environmentalism while discovering the garden’s rich, inclusive biodiversity. Polaroid cameras and film available for rent and purchase, personal cameras are also encouraged! Up to 25 people; lasts about 45 minutes.
