One of only two non-sectarian burial grounds in Manhattan, the cemetery contains 258 underground marble vaults and has seen the funerals of many distinguished citizens, including President James Monroe and many founders of city institutions. Originally built on farmland, it is now a green oasis in this downtown neighborhood.
